존 커제일

존 홀랜드 커제일(John Holland Cazale, 1935년 8월 12일 ~ 1978년 3월 13일)은 미국의 배우이다. 7년에 걸쳐 다섯 편의 영화에 출연했으며, 이 영화들은 모두 각 시상식에서 아카데미 작품상 후보에 올랐다. 커제일은 보스턴에서 연극 배우로 활동을 시작했으며, 지역 극단부터 오프브로드웨이와 브로드웨이를 넘나들며 알 파치노, 메릴 스트립, 샘 워터스턴과 함께 연기했다. 커제일은 곧 할리우드 최고의 성격파 배우 중 한 명으로 자리매김했다. 그 시작은 프랜시스 포드 코폴라의 《대부》(1972)와 《대부 2》(1974)에서 오랜 친구인 파치노의 상대역이자 비운의 유약한 인물인 프레도 콜레오네 역을 맡은 것이었다. 또한 코폴라의 《컨버세이션》(1974)과 시드니 루멧의 《뜨거운 오후》(1975)에 출연했으며, 《뜨거운 오후》를 통해 골든 글로브상 후보에 올랐다. 1977년 폐암 진단을 받았으나, 《디어 헌터》(1978)에서 맡은 역할을 끝까지 연기하기로 결정했다. 촬영을 마친 직후인 1978년 3월 13일, 뉴욕에서 42세를 일기로 사망했다. 《대부 3》(1990)에는 프레도 역을 연기했던 커제일의 과거 촬영분이 사용되었다.

John Holland Cazale was an American actor. He appeared in five films over seven years, each of which was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Picture at their respective awards ceremonies. Cazale started as a theater actor in Boston, ranging from regional, to off-Broadway, to Broadway acting alongside Al Pacino, Meryl Streep, and Sam Waterston. Cazale soon became one of Hollywood's premier character actors, starting with his role as the doomed, weak-minded Fredo Corleone alongside longtime friend Pacino in Francis Ford Coppola's The Godfather (1972) and The Godfather Part II (1974). He also appeared in Coppola's The Conversation (1974) and Sidney Lumet's Dog Day Afternoon (1975), the latter of which earned him a Golden Globe Award nomination. In 1977, Cazale was diagnosed with lung cancer, but chose to complete his role in The Deer Hunter (1978). Shortly after filming was completed, he died in New York City on March 13, 1978, aged 42.
